Since 2021, students in the MSc in Geography and Geomatics have participated in the Integrated International Projectwork course. This compulsory, pivotal course serves as a cornerstone of the curriculum, merging various geographical domains into a singular, research-based learning experience.
The program is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice. It builds upon previously acquired knowledge while fostering advanced research skills, including critical literature reviews, complex research design, and rigorous scientific analysis.
Sustainable Fieldwork in Denmark
The core of the experience involves students designing original research projects that address global sustainability challenges. These projects are situated within the local spatial and social realities of an unfamiliar study region in Denmark.
Central to the course is a multi-day international fieldwork expedition. During this period, students apply diverse field techniques for data collection and interpretation directly within the landscape they are studying.
Collaborative Partnerships and Expert Guidance
Success is driven by strong international cooperation. Colleagues from the University of Roskilde (RUC) and the University of Copenhagen (KU), along with partners from the Odsherred municipality and geopark, provide essential guidance on the specific Danish context.
This collaborative environment encourages students to work in an interdisciplinary and international context. Beyond technical geomatics skills, the course enhances vital "soft skills" such as teamwork, cross-cultural communication, and entrepreneurial thinking.

The program’s quality has also earned international acclaim. In 2025, it was awarded second place in the ENLIGHT Teaching & Learning Awards at the ENLIGHT conference in Uppsala, Sweden.
